Pick sizes for what the icon is for
| Use | Sizes inside the .ico |
|---|---|
| Website favicon.ico | 16, 32, 48 |
| Windows desktop shortcut | 16, 32, 48, 256 |
| Windows app / installer (.exe icon) | 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128, 256 |

ICO or PNG for a favicon?
Both. Browsers happily use PNG and SVG favicons when you link them, but many tools, crawlers and RSS readers still request /favicon.ico directly without reading your HTML. Keeping a small multi-size .ico at the root answers those requests and ends the 404s in your logs.
Converting a specific format? There are dedicated pages for PNG to ICO, JPG to ICO and SVG to ICO, WebP to ICO, GIF to ICO, BMP to ICO and AVIF to ICO, each with tips for that format. Going the other way: ICO to PNG and ICO to SVG. For a Mac app icon, use PNG to ICNS.
Questions people ask
What is an ICO file?
ICO is the Windows icon format, and the original favicon format. One .ico can hold several images at different sizes; Windows and browsers pick the size that fits. Since Windows Vista, those images may be stored as PNG, which keeps files small and supports full transparency.
Which image formats can this ICO converter read?
Anything your browser can display: PNG, JPG/JPEG, SVG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP and, in most browsers, AVIF. They are all converted to the same kind of .ico.
Can I turn an ICO back into PNG?
Yes, with the ICO to PNG converter on this site. It lists every image inside an .ico and lets you save each one as a PNG.
How do I open an .ico file?
Windows opens .ico files in the Photos app. On a Mac, Preview opens them and shows each size as a page. In a browser you can drop the file on our ICO to PNG page to see what is inside.
Is there a file size limit?
Source images up to 25 MB each. The resulting .ico is usually 2–40 KB depending on how many sizes you include.
