Letters, an emoji or your logo in; a complete favicon package out: favicon.ico, favicon.svg, Apple touch icons, Android and PWA icons, the web manifest and the exact <link> tags. Free, no signup, and made on your device.

Heating the forge… (the generator needs JavaScript)

Why one favicon isn’t enough any more

In 1999 Internet Explorer 5 looked for a single 16×16 file called favicon.ico in your site’s root. Today the same little mark appears in browser tabs on retina screens, on iPhone and Android home screens, in Google’s search results, in Windows taskbars and in the install prompt of a progressive web app. Each surface reads a different file at a different size, and some of them insist on an opaque background.

That’s why the package has 18 files. You don’t have to reference them all: the HTML we give you is the modern minimal set of six lines, and the extras sit quietly on your server for the devices that ask for them by name.

Three ways to make one

From text. One to three letters is the most legible thing at 16 pixels. Pick a heavy typeface; hairline serifs vanish at tab size. The letters are converted to outlines, so the SVG needs no web font.

From an emoji. The fastest favicon there is, good for side projects, docs and internal tools. See the emoji favicon page for the one-line SVG trick.

From your logo. Upload a square PNG or SVG. If the logo has a wordmark, crop to the symbol: words are unreadable at 16 px. The favicon size guide shows exactly what survives at each size.

Questions people ask

Is this favicon generator really free, with no signup?

Yes. There is no account, no email gate and no watermark. The icons are drawn by JavaScript in your own browser tab, so there is no server cost to recover and nothing to sign up for.

Are my uploaded logos sent anywhere?

No. Images you drop in are read with the browser’s File API and drawn onto a canvas locally. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the generator still works.

Which favicon files do I actually need?

For almost every site: favicon.ico (with 16, 32 and 48 px inside) for old browsers and the automatic /favicon.ico request, favicon.svg for modern browsers, apple-touch-icon.png (180×180) for iPhones and iPads, and the 192 and 512 px PNGs referenced from site.webmanifest for Android and installable web apps. The package contains all of them plus extra sizes for older devices.

What size should the source image be?

Square and at least 512×512 pixels. Bigger is fine; the generator scales down in steps so small sizes stay sharp. An SVG logo is best because it has no resolution limit.

Why is the Apple touch icon not transparent?

iOS fills transparent areas of a home-screen icon with black. The generator gives apple-touch-icon.png a solid background (your tile colour, or white for images without a tile) so it looks right on the home screen.

How do I make a favicon from text or initials?

Choose Letters, type one to three characters, pick a typeface, colours and a tile shape. The letters are converted to vector outlines, so favicon.svg stays razor sharp and does not depend on the visitor having the font.

What is the best free favicon generator?

Look for one that outputs the modern set (an .ico with 16, 32 and 48 px, an SVG, a 180 px Apple touch icon, 192 and 512 px Android icons including maskable ones, and a manifest) and gives you the HTML. FaviconForge Pro does all of that in the browser, without uploads, accounts or watermarks, and adds a dark-mode SVG option and a live checker.

Is a favicon 16x16 or 32x32?

Both. 16×16 is the tab size on standard screens and 32×32 is used on high-density screens and the Windows taskbar. Put both (plus 48×48) inside favicon.ico, and add an SVG that covers every size.

Will Google show my favicon in search results?

Google asks for a square favicon that is a multiple of 48×48 px, linked with rel="icon" from your home page and crawlable. The package includes a 48 px image inside favicon.ico, a 48 px PNG and a 96 px PNG. It can take days or weeks for Google to recrawl and update the icon.
